Back to the list of new artwork that joined our local New Bedford Art collection in the past month.

The piece we acquired was part  of a large group exhibition entitled "Negative Space - A Stencil Show " at Ugly Gallery on Union St. New Bedford. Ugly Gallery specializes in Urban Contemporary Art  and Apparel.

The artist is Chase Sayer Stevens is a Stencil/Street Artist who uses spray paint, stencils and collage elements in his mixed media work. Chase's series at the exhibit featured New Bedford related imagery, all having strong layering techniques and interesting shifts in dimension. This remarkable stencil show will be up till the end of May at Ugly Gallery. Check it out before it closes.

Stay tuned to see the piece we chose to join our collection- I cant wait to pick it up :-)

“New Bedford Harbor in a New Light,” An exhibit of recent work by forty local artists has begun. The artwork will be on display simultaneously at two venues. The first at The New Bedford Art Museum which opened its doors to this exquisite exhibit on May 9 AHA Night to 300 visitors and went over that figure at the Opening Reception yesterday May 11th.

Yesterday's opening was fantastic, the work is contemporary, edgy and relevant as the participating artists took this theme to its endless possibilities and back. From Paintings to sculptures to instillations to video art the works on display range widely in terms of subject matter like the fishing industry, pollution, immigration, culture and personal histories.

This extensive  and well planned exhibition is curated by Kim Barry, Willoughby Elliott, and Lasse Antonsen who invited artists to create thematic work inspired by the New Bedford harbor, history and culture.

The second venue will be at The University Art Gallery at UMass Dartmouth Star Store. It opens its doors from May 21 with an Opening Reception on Thursday, June 13th Aha Night 6:00- 9:00pm. My piece "The Other Side of the Harbor" that I have been mentioning in my previous blogs will be at this venue.

Below is a list of artists exhibiting at the two venues for " New Bedford Harbor in a New Light"

#17 A Great show for my BCC Drawing class

Last night my Bristol Community College Students showcased their drawings at the Star Store (downtown New Bedford) for Aha Night. The students had a great time discussing their work with the many visitors, family members and friends that came to view the show.

Their exhibition "Birds Under City View" was a good demonstration of what this Spring13 Drawing-1 class has learnt during this semester. For most of these students this class was their first real introduction to drawing which shows the individual level of comprehension and drive within the class. The birds in the drawings were drawn from direct observation, courtesy the UMass Dartmouth Natural History Cabinet, using a array of pencils, charcoal pencils, charcoal, conte sticks, chamois, ink washes and paper collage within a full range of value (light and dark).

Working on this exhibit was an exciting project for these students as they were able to utilize the knowledge they acquired throughout the semester, giving them a sense of pride and accomplishment. Thank you to everyone who made this possible.

#16 My Exhibit "Jubilee" at Travessia comes to an end.

All good things must come to an end as my exhibit "Jubilee" at Travessia Winery came down yesterday after a month of being on display...my how time flies. The work was well received at Travessia with great feedback, new contacts and some sales. In addition it was particularly pleasing for me to walk by at night on the street and see it all lit up from inside. It was as if the pieces came to life dancing and celebrating.... Jubilation indeed.

I would like to send a warm thank you to Travessia for the invitation to showcase my work at your winery and a big thumbs-up for always supporting the Arts in New Bedford.

The next exhibit on display at The Wall @ Travessia is a small showing of works in and from nature by local New Bedford Artist Helen Granger. Opens May 9th AHA Night (Tonight)

For those of you who may not know, in addition to being a full time Fine Arts painter I am also an Art Educator. I have taught at the high school level for 4 years and now at the college level for 9 years. One of my current classes is Drawing 1 at Bristol Community College at the Star Store downtown New bedford.

In this class students learn the basic elements of drawing, including keen observational skills and building eye/hand coordination while using a variety of drawing media such as pencils, charcoal, conte sticks, brush and ink and paper collage.

After alot of hard work and dedication they are ready to showcase their offerings in... "Birds under City View"

#14 Wearable Art Collection

Some of my favorite Artworks to collect are Wearable Art - "Art to Wear"

Wearable Art refers to individually designed pieces of handmade clothing or jewelry created as fine or expressive art. The work is intended to be worn and is usually for the person wearing it an artistic creation or expression. And this is how I feel when I wear the beautiful and skillful creations by sustainable Artist, Rhonda Fazio from Dyer Maker Studios, who is known for her Naturally Dyed Silk scarves, sarongs, weaved shawls, wall hangings and more.

#13 Rob Cortes - Crustacean Night Light

The Next addition in our local Art Collection is: Rob Cortes' Northern Crab Night Light.

Along with collecting Fine Art pieces for my Art Collection I also enjoy collecting Fine Craft, where Function meets Art and Form meets Function. What is the difference between Craft and Fine Art? This is always a topic of concern to many - it is a conversation that is always brought up at Art school and Art Communities everywhere and it could sometimes get heated as ideas and beliefs on this topic are extremely varied.

Craft and Fine Arts are both highly creative disciplines, and include many different styles and processes, which is open to interpretation and that is the great thing about the creative world we live in. To me the difference lies in whether the work is Functional of Non-Functional. Fine Art pieces are usually Non-Functional and are made purely for aesthetic purposes; whereas Crafts are items that though they may have great beauty and take much skill, they are usually meant to be used in some form or fashion.

Today the term Artisan bridges the gap between Fine Artists and Craftsmen and it represents Artists who create items that have clear functions and purposes, along with strong artistic aspects in the work. Even the word Artisan can create heated debate as well. I am merely skimming the surface of this popular topic to introduce my newest piece in our collection...Rob Cortes Night Light fixture.

You can see more of Rob's work at his studio located at The Cummings Building,  96 William St., Downtown, New Bedford, MA 02740 - during Aha Nights ( 2nd Thursday of every month)

#12 My Blogging Challenge - so far so good :-)

Incase you were not aware of my 30 blogs in 30 days challenge (which I mentioned on my Facebook Art page) let me give you a quick update.

My Marketing couch who is a marketing genius and a true gem gave me a challenge to write 30 blog posts in 30 days (one post a day) YIKES!!. At first I gasped with shock and lack of air and then I started laughing but she was not kidding at all. I told her that I had started a blog last year and I only managed to muster up 5 blogs "5" in an entire year so maybe 30 in a month was asking a bit much :-( So I tried to convince her that  maybe I should start crawling first then walking and finally running and that writing a blog every day was virtually impossible for me. I even tried bargaining with her that every couple of months I could write one blog then once a month then twice a month then once a week and then finally once a day for the 30 days - that seemed to make total sense to me. But she wasn't having any of it and said "Absolutely Not!"

She explained that the 30 day challenge trains and disciplines you at first then you can slow it down to once a week but you must push yourself at the beginning. So I trusted her and decided to take the challenge and here I am 12 days in and not looking back.

Starting a blog can seem overwhelming but according to my marketing coach it is one of the simplest ways to join the on-line community.  Each blog post written adds new, fresh content to your website and very importantly your business begins to have a voice.

With that said my challenge is going well... So far so good. The first few days were overwhelming and after feeling a sense of accomplishment after writing each blog I would suddenly go into panic mode about the nexts day's blog. It is definitely getting easier and I am working out stratergies to calm the panic like making lists of topics and actually blogging ahead when the creative juices and ideas start flowing. Also, with a lot going on in my studio right now with up coming exhibitions and art deadlines, it makes it much easier.

Last week I was feeling under the weather and I didn't write for a day I was a mess with panic and disappointment.  But I made up for it a couple days after and wrote two posts in a day -whoop whoop proud of myself. So im back on track and rearing to continue my challenge to the end.

And thanks to you all for reading :-)

#11 "Melancholia No. 3" a brilliant addition to our collection.

The Next addition in our local art collection is:

"Melancholia #3" A work of art from local Print Maker Pat Daughton. This piece definitely has more of a formal aspect to it where composition is carefully and brilliantly thought out. Negative space is used in clever ways to create optical illusions between the foreground, middle ground and background.
Again this is a predominantly black/white and gray piece to which I seem to gravitate to - however the sophisticated hints of subtle color give a unique dimension to this piece that I oh so love.
