Artist Statement
IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
New Bedford has been my home away from home for the past 16 years. This area has, and continues to serve, as a major source of inspiration throughout my career in the United States, both consciously and subconsciously.
I am influenced greatly by its rich architecture; its prolific fishing harbor; its fascinating histories of Whaling; the Underground Railroad & Textiles; its multicultural backbone and the artistic veins that pump the city with life and vitality.
As I began to translate some of these significant influences into a visual narrative, I allowed the work to take its own shape and form. I went from the literal to the imaginative and even at times into the ethereal. In addition, these influences naturally fused with my native Caribbean heritage, culture and sensibilities to create unique and vibrant mixed media collage paintings, capturing the energy and essence of New Bedford through my eyes.
May it come alive for you, and inspire you to re-think, re-visit and appreciate the beauty, uniqueness and historical tapestry that is New Bedford, our neighborhood, our home.
