The Gallery was alive last Wednesday with over 30 teachers from around the country here in New Bedford learning about the Underground Railroad in the "Sailing to Freedom" workshop. My Underground Railroad piece "The Other Side of the Harbor" was viewed and discussed and I was truly honored to share my inspiration and work with this amazing group.

This workshop is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and is a partnership between the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and the New Bedford Historical Society.

"The Last time i saw paris" Acrylic, charcoal and graphite on paper 40"x30"
While brainstorming for this piece I asked myself the questions, when was the last time you saw Paris? and what was it like? So I reminisced back to 2005 when I visited Paris briefly for a weekend after spending 6 weeks in Brittany. It was a rainy day that echoed the layering of the Parisian urban landscape. In doing my research for this piece I discovered the 1940’s song “The Last Time I saw Paris” lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein and composed by Jerome Kern which further influenced this piece and its title.

“The last time I saw Paris
Her heart was warm and gay
I heard the laughter of her heart in every street café…”

This unveiling was presented by:

The New Bedford Artist in residence partners
The New Bedford Art Museum
The Bew Bedford Historical Society
The New Bedford Whaling National Historic park
UMASS Dartmouth, CVPA
Whaling History Alliance

Yesterday on Saturday July 18th 2015 was the dedication of a public mural celebrating the legacy of the 54th massachusetts regiment. The mural is part of the Artist-in-Residence partnership and was created by muralist Jared Bader and positioned on 41 William St (In the Carter's parking lot - on the Freestones wall)

The New Bedford Historical Society led by the President Lee Blake has worked to make sure New Bedford residents know about the 54th Massachusetts Regiment and the major role they had in fighting for freedom. Forty six New Bedford residents were members of the 54th. As a board member I am very honored to be a part of this moment in recognizing and celebrating the memory of these brave men.
