The Gallery was alive last Wednesday with over 30 teachers from around the country here in New Bedford learning about the Underground Railroad in the "Sailing to Freedom" workshop. My Underground Railroad piece "The Other Side of the Harbor" was viewed and discussed and I was truly honored to share my inspiration and work with this amazing group.
This workshop is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and is a partnership between the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and the New Bedford Historical Society. I am so very excited to have been selected to be an Artist/Mentor for this year's Art All-State Masachusetts June 12 & 13. Art All-State Massachusetts is an intensive two-day program for high school juniors who come together to create collaborative installations. check out all of the groups and mentors involved. https://www.facebook.com/ArtAllStateMA?fref=ts Here are pics of David's Shapleigh's and my group of Creative, Intelligent and Amazing young Artists. On June 12 &13, I was very excited and honored to be an Artist/Mentor for this year's Art All-State Masachusetts. Art All-State Massachusetts is an intensive two-day program for high school juniors who come together every year to create collaborative installations. For more info on Art All-State: http://www.massarted.com/art_allstate.html As part of the project I was also involved in an exhibition that highlighted work from each Artist/Mentor. New paintings from my Totem Series were displayed at Umass CVPA Campus Gallery. Selected Artist/Mentors were: Andy Bell, Eileen deRosas, Elizabeth Dooher, Rich Gombar, YoAhn Han, Rosa Ibarra, CM Judge, Dori Latman, Carolyn Lewenberg, Joanna Matuck, Kristen Mills, Lauren Savoia, David Shapleigh, Brett Sylvia, David Shapleigh and Alison Wells Earlier this year a call for artists was sent out for a new exhibition to be held at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at the Star Store building entitled PARREEEE!!!!! When I received the prospectus I immediately hit the studio and conjured up past feelings emotions trips and memories of my thoughts dreams and realities of Paris and French culture on a whole and... created my offering for the show. I then sent in an application and was accepted into the show :-) Selected Artists are: Tatiana Artuar, Jennifer Avery, Philippe Lejeune, Anthony J. Miraglia, Elena Peteva, Lisa Redburn, Suzanne Schireson, Marc St. Pierre, Ray Veary and Alison Wells Jurors are: Jean-François Allaux, Associate Professor, UMass Dartmouth; Viera Levitt, Gallery Director, UMass Dartmouth; and Robert P. Stack, co-owner and curator, Yellow Peril Gallery, Providence, RI While brainstorming for this piece I asked myself the questions, when was the last time you saw Paris? and what was it like? So I reminisced back to 2005 when I visited Paris briefly for a weekend after spending 6 weeks in Brittany. It was a rainy day that echoed the layering of the Parisian urban landscape. In doing my research for this piece I discovered the 1940’s song “The Last Time I saw Paris” lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein and composed by Jerome Kern which further influenced this piece and its title. “The last time I saw Paris Her heart was warm and gay I heard the laughter of her heart in every street café…” Parreeee runs from May 28 - September 10. Check out Don Wilkinson's review of pareeee in The Standard Times http://www.southcoasttoday.com/article/20150702/ENTERTAINMENTLIFE/150709955 This unveiling was presented by: The New Bedford Artist in residence partners The New Bedford Art Museum The Bew Bedford Historical Society The New Bedford Whaling National Historic park UMASS Dartmouth, CVPA Whaling History Alliance Yesterday on Saturday July 18th 2015 was the dedication of a public mural celebrating the legacy of the 54th massachusetts regiment. The mural is part of the Artist-in-Residence partnership and was created by muralist Jared Bader and positioned on 41 William St (In the Carter's parking lot - on the Freestones wall) The New Bedford Historical Society led by the President Lee Blake has worked to make sure New Bedford residents know about the 54th Massachusetts Regiment and the major role they had in fighting for freedom. Forty six New Bedford residents were members of the 54th. As a board member I am very honored to be a part of this moment in recognizing and celebrating the memory of these brave men. Downtown New Bedford, Inc. held its 24th Annual Spring Social at The Wamsutta Club at 427 County Street from 5-7 pm on Wednesday, April 1, 2015. The Spring Social is an important event that helps to sustain the many programs and projects offered to members and the downtown community by DNB, Inc. It is always well attended and offers high quality entertainment, artist displays and food and beverage. As a DNB Inc member I was honored to have a display of my artwork at this year's Spring Social. Preparation for me began weeks in advance - see some of my prep pics below. On the Night of the Event Alison Wells Fine Art Studio & Gallery is proud to be one of the newest members of Downtown New Bedford Inc (DNB Inc).
DNB Inc's goal is to continue Downtown’s growth as an economically healthy, welcoming and vibrant place in which to work, live, shop, dine and visit. Learn more about the amazing work they do: http://www.downtownnb.org/about.html The Zeiterion Theatre in downtown New Bedford has recently begun to feature the artwork of local artists in their newly renovated Penler Room which hosts VIP receptions for members and guest artists.
Thank you to the 'Z' for supporting local art and for inviting me to be the featured artist for the month of March. My paintings looked stunning on the Penler Room's walls and the feedback and interest in my work was amazing. In honor of Fibers Month and Woman's month in March Alison Wells Fine Art Gallery hosted a group exhibition featuring three female Fiber Artists: Jodi Stevens, Barbara Watler and Rhonda Fazio. View a slide show of our exhibit and opening reception below. Take a glimpse of our 3 featured Artists: Jodi Stevens uses textile materials such as weaving thread or yarn in unconventional ways. By layering, wrapping, or methodically laying out individual threads, she creates an overall atmosphere, sometimes a specific form, often with monochromatic or cascading colors. Barbara Watler's processes have often involved appliqué rather than piecing. In the beginning she used direct appliqué in a collage methodology but then became very interested in whole cloth reverse appliqué. In recent years she has incorporated machine thread painting on canvas to create a heavily textured surface with a tapestry-like appearance. Rhonda Fazio's work assimilates the textile design methods of ancient and indigenous cultures with the agrarian culture of Western Civilization. Her work is largely produced without the use of fossil fuel, it relies more on the human process of design rather than the mechanized version of it.
